Chocolate Sour Cream Cake

From the kitchen of Carolyn Butler

Ingredients

  • Bring to a boil: 1 stick butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 Tbsp cocoa
  • Add: 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Beat in: 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup sour cream (8 oz)
  • Frosting: 1 stick butter
  • 4 Tbsp cocoa
  • 6 Tbsp milk
  • 1 lb box powdered sugar (10X)
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions

  1. Bring butter, water, and cocoa to a boil in a medium saucepan; remove from heat.
  2. Add the flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Beat in the eggs, baking soda, and sour cream.
  4. Bake in a generously greased and lightly floured 13x9x2 pan at 350° for about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  5. Frost in the pan while hot (you may not want to use all of the icing).
  6. For the frosting, boil the butter, cocoa, and milk together; remove from heat and add the powdered sugar and vanilla.
Same recipe appears on two cards - a printed original and Sally's own handwritten copy crediting Carolyn Butler, who noted the frosting makes enough for 2 cakes.
