Tips/Technique

Seasoning a Cast-Iron Skillet

From the kitchen of (newspaper clipping, quoting "Hill")

Ingredients

  • Solid Crisco shortening
  • Paper towel

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry a new cast-iron skillet to remove its wax coating.
  2. Rub solid Crisco into the inside of the skillet with your fingers so it works into the pores of the iron.
  3. Place in a 300° oven for about 10 minutes.
  4. Remove and wipe out the excess shortening with a paper towel, then repeat as needed until the pan is seasoned.
Same newspaper clipping as the Fried Chicken entry above; final steps reconstructed slightly since the clipping text runs off the edge of the card.
